Tobacco use is common in Kenya. Dentist often meet patients who use various forms of tobacco within their practice. Unfortunately, most dentists are often ill-equipped with the knowledge and skills to assist patients quit the habit. This is despite the fact that there are simple methods available to assist patients quit smoking which can very easily be included as part of the treatment plan for patients who are smokers. The aim of the presentation is to introduce participants to simple methods of assisting patients quit tobacco use within the dental clinic. Interested participants will then be invited for a three day workshop later in the year to learn more on how to assist patients quit smoking.


By the end of the session, participants should be able to;
·        Understand the tobacco situation and trends in tobacco use in Kenya
·        Know the available methods of assisting patients quit smoking
·        Know the available evidence based tobacco dependence treatment options including practical counseling, motivational intervention and pharmacological treatment.
·        Freely discuss on the potential for tobacco cessation services as part of charged treatment by dentists.
