Medical/Dental practice is constantly evolving into universal state of the art standards of care. The providers (doctors) and  consumers of these services (patients) are now, more than ever, forced to keep up with these positive improvements. More people are also becoming aware of their expanded rights and freedoms in regard to healthcare provision. Patients are now able to demand quality health care services from the well- trained health providers. This, by extension, requires that the doctors constantly work within certain established  ethical and professional standards, a breach of which attracts heavy legal consequences. It is against this background, as well as the increasing number of medico-legal lawsuits against doctors, that underscores the importance of  reminding qualified doctors including trainees of their responsibilities to their clients. This will by no means be exhaustive, but is intended to serve as a trigger for practitioners to find more comprehensive sources and read extensively about this important subject.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
i) Describe professional ethical principles underlying clinical practice
ii) Understand the doctrine of informed consent
iii) Manage & assess risk in clinical practice
iv) Document and maintain proper clinical records
v) Understand the role of witnesses in medico- legal lawsuits
