Description

Patency of the airway is primary to the development of the craniofacial complex. Any obstruction to normal breathing will lead to altered growth. As Enlow stated, so much is happening around the airway during growth, it a wonder balance occurs at all. From the coining of the word, “Adenoid Facies” by CV Tomes to the extensive work of Linder-Aronson the adenoids have been blamed for being the spoiltsport in the story of craniofacial growth and Development. Do all lymphoid tissues follow the same development pattern? Have we, as Dentists given this gland its due place in diagnosis and treatment planning? Or have we let our medical colleagues override our judgment for the better or the worst?  Have we, to start with, understood this gland in its entirety? With increasing concern of the multitude of health problems attributed to Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and role of Adenoids in promoting mouth breathing, we as clinicians need to sit up and take heed of this gland. In the course of this presentation let us demystify the Adenoid gland and its ramifications on the orofacial region and the role of the Orthodontist and Dentist in its management.
