Description

Current trends in orthodontic care emphasise alternatives to the extraction of teeth for orthodontic reasons. In the absence of growth potential in any orthodontic patient, alternative orthodontic strategies are now available to help in avoiding major surgical procedures in unwilling patients. As the emphasis on evidence-based treatments increase throughout dentistry and medicine, advantages and disadvantages of different orthodontic options have continuously been interrogated in the scientific and clinical fora. Given the results of a variety of reports in the peer-reviewed literature, it can be concluded that orthodontic treatment in adult (non-growing) patients can produce improved aesthetics for those who have combination of crowding and dento-alveolar protrusion. However, careful diagnosis and treatment planning followed by evidence-based treatment decisions should be the accepted clinical norm as the specialty of Orthodontics prepares itself to see more adult patients now and in the future. This oral presentation will focus mainly on the current orthodontic strategies in the management of non-growing patients.

Objectives

To equip the participants with current knowledge and trends in orthodontic management of non-growing patients. To relate this information to diagnosing, treating and maintaining non-growing patients with malocclusion and other dento-facial anomalies.
