At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand why EPH GESTOSIS should be called EPH GESTOSIS and NOT Pre-eclampsia. They shall also be able to learn how to diagnose and manage this condition.

Key Messages

2.

It is most prevalent in primigravidas

3.

The treatment helps to protect the mother. It does not change the foetal outcome

4.

It does not occur before 20th week of pregnancy except in the presence of trophoblastic disease.

Abstract

Pre-eclampsia is a misnomer. It should actually be called EPH GESTOSIS according to the Organisation Gestosis of Switzerland whereby E stands for Edema, P stands for Proteinuria and H for Hypertension. Prim gravidity is a major risk factor. EPH GESTOSIS adversely affects foetal outcome. The rate of stillbirths is directly proportional and Apgar score as well as foetal weight is inversely proportional to the degree of severity of EPH GESTOSIS.
