PRIMARY PREVENTION OF STROKE

Learning Objectives

Identify , Risk Stratify and Appropriately manage patients to prevent stroke occurence

Key Messages

1.

1. 10 cardiovascular risk factors account for 90%  of population attributable risk for stroke occurence.

2. Public awareness  of these risk factors and their reduction is important.

3.That Stroke is a BRAIN ATTACK akin to HEART ATTACK. Public awareness is important for early recognition and management of stroke.

4. Risk stratification models exist to predict stroke occurence in patients with transient ischaemic attack(TIA)  or those with Atrial fibrillation.

Abstract

Stroke is a leading global cause of death, with an estimated 5·8 million fatal events in 2005 two-thirds in low-income and middle-income countries. Stroke management leads to enormous expenditure of resources and patient are left with great morbidity impairing productivity in many.

In Kenya and other third world countries with many other competing  health expenditures for the meagre health budget its important to invest on preventive measures which largely cost little but impact many in the population.

Medical practioners should thus have the knowledge to appropriatly identify, risk stratify and manage the patients with cardiovacular risk factors to prevent stroke occurence.
