Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on the diagnosis and management of orofacial infections, a common group of conditions that can range from localized dental infections to life-threatening deep neck space infections. The session will review the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and complications of odontogenic and non-odontogenic infections affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Participants will explore evidence-based approaches to clinical assessment, diagnostic investigations, antimicrobial therapy, surgical intervention, and multidisciplinary management. Special emphasis will be placed on the early recognition of severe infections, airway compromise, sepsis, and the impact of antimicrobial resistance on treatment outcomes. The session will also address preventive strategies, including oral hygiene promotion and timely dental care, to reduce the burden of orofacial infections.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Describe the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of common orofacial infections. Differentiate between odontogenic and non-odontogenic infections of the oral and maxillofacial region. Recognize the clinical manifestations and complications of orofacial infections, including deep neck space infections and airway emergencies. Conduct a systematic clinical assessment and select appropriate diagnostic investigations for patients presenting with orofacial infections. Apply evidence-based antimicrobial therapy and principles of antimicrobial stewardship in the management of orofacial infections. Identify indications for surgical intervention, including incision and drainage, extraction of the source tooth, and management of abscesses. Recognize and manage complications such as cellulitis, osteomyelitis, sepsis, and airway obstruction. Promote preventive strategies through oral health education, early treatment of dental disease, and regular dental care. Strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration among dental surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, medical practitioners, pharmacists, and nursing staff to optimize patient outcomes.
