Description
ABSTRACT As the tooth ages, calcification of the root canal system occurs naturally. However, if a tooth is subjected to traumatic events, dental caries or restorative procedures, increased deposition of tooth structure can occur causing occlusion or blockage of the root canal system. Once the root canal system becomes sclerotic, it presents a change as pertains attaining patency. Furthermore, endodontic mishaps such as ledge creation, perforation and instrument separation may happen while attempting to negotiate sclerosed canals. For a successful treatment outcome, despite the sclerosis, the root canal system should be efficaciously cleaned and shaped. The clinician thus must be equipped with necessary skills and armamentaria to effectively clean and shape such canals. This discussion focuses on the etiology and management of sclerotic canals.
