Description
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organ systems. The clinical manifestations of SLE can vary.
Objectives
Skin rash: A butterfly-shaped rash on the face is a characteristic feature of SLE, although other types of skin rashes may also occur.
Joint pain and swelling: Arthritis is a common symptom of SLE, and joint pain and swelling may be present in multiple joints.
Fatigue: Many individuals with SLE experience persistent fatigue, which can be severe.
Fever: Low-grade fevers may be present in some individuals with SLE.
Raynaud's phenomenon: This is a condition in which the fingers and toes turn white or blue in response to cold temperatures or stress.
Photosensitivity: Individuals with SLE may experience increased sensitivity to sunlight, which can cause skin rashes and other symptoms.
Kidney problems: SLE can affect the kidneys, leading to proteinuria (excess protein in the urine), hematuria (blood in the urine), and in severe cases, kidney failure.
Neurological symptoms: SLE can affect the central and peripheral nervous systems, leading to symptoms such as seizures, cognitive impairment, and peripheral neuropathy.
