Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session will focus on the provision of comprehensive postnatal contraceptive services as an essential component of postpartum care. The session will review evidence-based strategies for counseling, selection, and initiation of appropriate contraceptive methods during the postpartum period. Participants will explore the timing, safety, effectiveness, and suitability of various contraceptive options, including lactational amenorrhea method (LAM), short-acting methods, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), and permanent methods. The session will emphasize the importance of informed choice, client-centered counseling, and integration of family planning services into postnatal care to reduce unintended pregnancies, improve birth spacing, and enhance maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Special attention will be given to the clinical considerations for breastfeeding mothers, women with medical conditions, and those recovering from obstetric complications.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Explain the importance of postnatal contraception in preventing unintended pregnancies and promoting healthy birth spacing. Describe the range of contraceptive methods available for postpartum women, including their mechanisms of action, effectiveness, and duration. Identify appropriate timing for initiation of different contraceptive methods following delivery, including immediate postpartum options. Apply medical eligibility criteria when selecting contraceptive methods for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers. Provide effective counseling to support informed decision-making and voluntary uptake of postnatal contraception. Recognize contraindications, side effects, and potential complications associated with different contraceptive methods. Integrate family planning services into routine postnatal care to ensure continuity of reproductive health services. Promote multidisciplinary collaboration among healthcare providers to improve access and utilization of postnatal contraceptive services.
