Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on the provision of comprehensive postnatal contraceptive services as an integral component of postpartum care. The session will review the importance of family planning during the postpartum period to prevent unintended pregnancies, promote healthy birth spacing, and improve maternal and child health outcomes. Participants will explore the range of contraceptive options suitable for postpartum women, including lactational amenorrhea method (LAM), short-acting methods, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), and permanent methods. Emphasis will be placed on timely initiation, medical eligibility criteria, breastfeeding considerations, and client-centered counseling to support informed decision-making. The session will also highlight strategies for integrating postnatal contraception into routine maternal and newborn care services to enhance access, uptake, and continuity of reproductive health care.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Explain the importance of postnatal contraception in preventing unintended pregnancies and promoting optimal birth spacing. Describe the various contraceptive options available during the postpartum period, including LAM, short-acting methods, long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), and permanent methods. Identify the appropriate timing for initiation of different contraceptive methods following delivery. Apply medical eligibility criteria when selecting contraceptive methods for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers. Provide effective counseling to postpartum women and their partners to support informed choice and uptake of suitable contraceptive methods.
