Description
Background: The periodic mechanical elimination of microbial biofilms is essential for controlling inflammatory periodontal disease. Ultrasonic scaling is one of the common clinical procedures performed as a part of routine non-surgical periodontics. The key objective being the supra and sub-gingival debridement of diseased tooth surfaces. This has been extensively evidenced to improve clinical parameters.
Objectives
Objectives of this presentation include: a summary recap of ultrasonic scaling explaining key concepts, a highlighting of ultrasonic tips and practical tips of safe usage, hazards and limitations of ultrasonic scaling and a mention of advances in ultrasonic scaling. However, manual skill, expertise of the clinician is key. An expected outcome of this presentation is practitioners reminded of ultrasonic scaling fundamentals plus safe and efficient ultrasonic scaling apart from the colloquial asinine blasting of calculus.
