Description

Periodontal diseases are infectious by nature and multiple pathogens are implicated in the aetiology. The identification of the causative pathogen would allow for targeted antibiotic therapy. However, the Challenge in identifying a specific etiological pathogen rather than microorganisms associated with disease is challenging.

Objectives

Similarly, antibiotics do not target individual pathogens and there in no antibiotic whose concentration in body fluids especially gingival crevicular fluid can inhibit all known putative pathogens. Several factors therefore must be considered in the selection of an antibiotic for use in management of periodontal diseases like the patientsâ?? clinical status and diagnosis, response to therapy, medical history, nature of colonizing bacteria, Risks and benefits of the drug, bacterial resistance, Susceptibility of bacteria to the drug and the Concentration of the drug in Gingival crevicular fluid.
