Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session provides a comprehensive update on cervical cancer screening and early detection strategies, with a focus on the role of HPV testing, interpretation of cytological results, and management of premalignant cervical lesions. The session will explore the natural history of cervical carcinogenesis driven by persistent high-risk HPV infection and review current screening modalities including HPV DNA testing, cytology (Pap smear), and visual inspection methods. Participants will gain practical skills in interpreting cytological findings using standardized reporting systems and correlating these with HPV test results to guide clinical decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based care algorithms for the management of abnormal screening results, including follow-up, colposcopy, treatment of precancerous lesions, and referral pathways. The session will also highlight strategies for integrating screening services into routine clinical practice to improve coverage, early detection, and prevention of cervical cancer.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Explain the natural history of cervical cancer and the role of persistent high-risk HPV infection in disease progression. Describe the principles and application of HPV testing, including types of HPV tests, indications, and interpretation of results. Interpret cervical cytology results using standardized classification systems (e.g., Bethesda system). Identify and classify premalignant cervical lesions and understand their clinical significance. Apply evidence-based care algorithms for the management of abnormal screening results, including triage, follow-up, and treatment. Determine appropriate referral pathways for colposcopy and specialist care. Integrate cervical cancer screening into routine healthcare services, including reproductive health and HIV care settings. Promote patient education, adherence to follow-up, and preventive strategies to reduce cervical cancer burden.
