Description
Diabetes as a comorbidity in a surgical patient increases risk of adverse outcomes. One study found the incidence of postoperative adverse events in those with diabetes was 7.7%, and A rise in plasma glucose postoperatively of 1 mmol/L increased adverse events by 1.31-fold.
Objectives
The physiological stress of surgery, plus anaesthetic agents, can further raise plasma glucose levels and increase insulin resistance.
