Description

This online course is targeted at primary healthcare practitioners in Sub-Saharan Africa(SSA) with a particular interest in the management of patients with Asthma and related respiratory conditions. This modular course is presented by renowned experts in the field of respiratory from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Ghana. It comprises eight short 1-hour modules providing the latest information on various facets of Asthma Management.

Objectives

Understanding Asthma Pathophysiology: Objective: By the end of this course, participants should be able to explain the underlying pathophysiology of asthma, including airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and the role of various inflammatory mediators. Recognizing Asthma Symptoms and Diagnosis: Objective: Participants will be able to identify and differentiate asthma symptoms from other respiratory conditions, understand the diagnostic criteria for asthma, and apply appropriate diagnostic tests to confirm the condition. Assessing Asthma Severity and Control: Objective: After completing the course, HCPs will be capable of assessing the severity and control of asthma in patients using standardized tools, such as the Asthma Control Test (ACT) or the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines. Personalized Asthma Action Plans: Objective: Participants will learn how to create personalized asthma action plans for patients, considering their individual triggers, medications, and management strategies to empower patients in self-care and prevent exacerbations. Inhaler Device Techniques and Adherence: Objective: HCPs will gain proficiency in teaching patients the correct use of various inhaler devices, ensuring proper inhalation techniques, and promoting medication adherence to enhance asthma management outcomes. Pharmacological Management: Objective: By the end of this course, participants will be familiar with the various asthma medications, including short-acting bronchodilators, long-acting beta-agonists, inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, and biologics, and know how to tailor treatment regimens to individual patients. Non-Pharmacological Interventions: Objective: HCPs will understand and be able to recommend non-pharmacological interventions, such as allergen avoidance, smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lifestyle modifications, as adjuncts to asthma management. Pediatric Asthma Management: Objective: Participants will acquire knowledge specific to managing asthma in pediatric patients, considering age-appropriate assessment, treatment options, and communication techniques to engage both children and their caregivers effectively. Handling Asthma Exacerbations: Objective: After completing this course, HCPs will be equipped to recognize and manage acute asthma exacerbations promptly, including when and how to escalate treatment and when to seek emergency care. Patient Education and Empowerment: Objective: Participants will learn effective communication strategies to educate and empower patients about asthma self-management, including the importance of medication compliance, recognizing worsening symptoms
