Description

The Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Training of Trainers (TOT) Program is a structured capacity-building initiative designed to equip selected healthcare professionals with the knowledge, practical skills, and teaching competencies required to deliver high-quality POCUS training to other healthcare providers. This program combines foundational ultrasound knowledge, hands-on scanning practice, image interpretation and clinical application. Participants will develop both technical proficiency in POCUS and the ability to facilitate effective, competency-based training for colleagues within their respective facilities or cadres. By developing a pool of competent POCUS trainers, the program aims to promote sustainable in-service training, strengthen the integration of ultrasound into routine clinical care, and expand access to timely bedside diagnostic assessment.

Objectives

Overall objective: To develop a competent pool of POCUS trainers who can effectively teach, supervise, assess, and support the integration of POCUS into clinical practice. Specific objectives: 1. Explain the principles of POCUS, including ultrasound physics, machine operation, probe selection, image optimization, and basic safety considerations. 2. Perform core POCUS examinations using appropriate scanning techniques and standardized protocols relevant to their clinical practice. 3. Acquire and interpret quality ultrasound images and recognize common normal and abnormal findings within the scope of their training. 4. Integrate POCUS findings into clinical decision-making, while understanding its limitations and the need for appropriate referral or further diagnostic evaluation. 5. Promote quality assurance and safe POCUS practice, including appropriate documentation, equipment care, image archiving, and adherence to relevant clinical protocols. 6. Develop and deliver competency-based POCUS training sessions, incorporating appropriate demonstrations, hands-on practice, feedback, and assessment.
